Categories of Fellowship

Fellows of the Academy are nominated, selected and elected by their peers in a competitive process reflecting their outstanding leadership and contributions to engineering in Canada and the world. They are elected as either Active Fellows or International Fellows. All Fellows in good standing are identified by the use of the post-nominals FCAE.

Active Fellows

  • Contribute to the well-being, security and prosperity of Canadians
  • Are voting members at the Annual General Meeting of the Academy
  • Engage in Academy committees and programs as participants and Chairs
  • Organize and attend CAE conferences and seminars
  • Author and edit CAE position papers and reports
  • May sit on the Board and serve as Officers of the corporation
  • Serve as Nominators and Seconders for new candidates as Fellows of the Academy
  • Vote for new Fellows in annual elections
  • Are Canadian citizens or permanent residents

Emeritus Fellows

(Active Fellows who are at least 70 years old and have been Fellows of the Academy for at least 5 years)

  • Are recognized for their long service and outstanding contributions
  • Are observers at the Annual General Meeting
  • Engage in Academy committees and programs as participants and Chairs
  • Organize and attend CAE conferences and seminars
  • Author and edit CAE position papers and reports
  • Serve as Seconders on new Fellow nominations

International Fellows

  • Are recognized for their work internationally and for their significant contributions to Canada
  • Are observers at the Annual General Meeting
  • Engage in Academy committees and programs as participants
  • Attend CAE conferences and seminars
  • Author and edit position papers and reports
  • May serve as a liaison with other national academies of engineering
  • Are neither Canadian citizens nor permanent residents
