CAE News from the weeks of 15 January and 22 January 2018

On a weekly basis, the CAE compiles news of interest to the organization and its members, and makes it publicly available on our website. The CAE works to highlight emerging issues in which engineering has a role as well as promote recognition of engineering excellence and innovation.

Edmund Kuffel, FCAE (b. 1924 – d. 12 January 2018)

We regret to announce the passing of Professor Edmund Kuffel, FCAE, former Dean of Engineering at the University of Manitoba. He had a major impact on the engineering community in Manitoba and was well respected and liked by his colleagues.

 Application of Microwave Engineering

The Las Vegas Resort is now applying research on microwaves done by McMaster University Professor Natalia Nikolova, FCAE, to keep guns out of its casino. For more information, click here.

Battery System Research Program

Engineering researchers at the University of Toronto, under the supervision of Dean Cristina Amon, FCAE, are developing the next generation of battery technology for electric vehicles. Electric vehicles are currently limited by “conservatively designed lithium battery packs, which ultimately dictate the EV driving range and longevity.” To address this issue, their aim is to design a battery pack that is affordable, more reliable, safer and long-lasting by developing “a cooling system that will tightly control thermal performance.” For more information, click here.

2018 Fellowship Renewal

By now, you should have received an email from CAE about Fellowship renewal for 2018. Fees are payable through the website Fellow’s portal, click here.

Simply log in and click the “Pay Fellowship Fee” link. From the payment page, you will also have the option to add a donation. Prompt payment is appreciated, otherwise a $25 late fee will be applied to your account as of February 11, 2018.
