CAE News for the weeks of 26 February and 5 March

On a weekly basis, the CAE compiles news of interest to the organization and its members, and makes it publicly available on our website. The CAE works to highlight emerging issues in which engineering has a role as well as promote recognition of engineering excellence and innovation.

Joint CAE/Conference Board Study Examines the Cost of a Cleaner Future 

The Canadian Academy of Engineering  and the Conference Board’s study, which examined the economic impacts of reducing GHG emissions, was featured in the Winter 2018 edition “The Best of the Board” research quarterly. For more information, click here.

Reminder: CAE/SAE Mobility Scholarship Deadline is 20 March

As part of Canada’s 150th birthday celebrations, and in recognition of the importance of transportation and mobility design engineering for the future of Canada, the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE) has partnered with the SAE Foundation Canada to offer an undergraduate scholarship in transportation and mobility engineering and an award for university students’ outstanding aerospace design. The CAE Bruce Aubin SAE Aerospace Design Award will be valued at $800, and the CAE William G. Belfry Memorial SAE Scholarships is $2000. The award and scholarship will be given annually to top engineering students from across Canada. More information is available here.

Water Stewardship

National Energy Woes

The Canadian Academy of Engineering has been calling for an East-West national electricity grid for years. A recent article in Sharp Magazine asks why a national power grid has not been built yet in Canada. For more information, click here.

Hind Rattan Award

Congratulations to Dr. Shushanta Mitra, FCAE and Executive Director of the Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology, for being awarded the prestigious Hind Rattan Award. For more information, click here.

Meritorious Accomplishments in Chemical Information

 Congratulations to Professor Paul Weiss, FCAE, who has been awarded the 2018 American Chemical Society Austin M. Patterson-E.J. Crane Award, given biennially for meritorious accomplishments in chemical information. For more information, click here.

Senate of Canada Appointments

The Canadian Academy of Engineering has been advised by the Chair of the Independent Advisory Board on Senate Appointments to share information with our Fellows about the process for nominating individuals to the Senate. YWCA Toronto Woman of Distinction

Congratulations to University of Toronto Engineering Prof Milica Radisic, FCAE, who was named a YWCA Toronto Woman of Distinction. According to her citation “As an award-winning engineer, academic and researcher, Dr. Milica Radisic is both a door opener and a role model for women in science and engineering. Milica is an international leader in the field of cardiovascular tissue engineering. Her innovative research has the potential to revolutionize treatment for people suffering from myocardial infraction and congestive heart failure.”
