CAE News for the weeks of 17, 24 and 30 December

On a weekly basis, the CAE compiles news of interest to the organization and its members, and makes it publicly available on our website. The CAE works to highlight emerging issues in which engineering has a role as well as promote recognition of engineering excellence and innovation.

Order of Canada Appointments

Three Fellows of the CAE were recently appointed to the Order of Canada.

Suzanne Lacasse, O.C. FCAE was cited “for her achievements as a distinguished geotechnical engineer, notably in the area of risk assessment,” Levente László Diosady, O.C., FCAE “for his contributions to the science of food engineering, which has improved the lives of millions of people around the world,” and Digvir Jayas, O.C. FCAE “for his advancements to agricultural practices worldwide, and for his promotion of academic and scientific research in Canada.”

Pfizer Research Chair at the University of Sherbrooke  

Nicolas Abatzoglou, FACG,  is the holder of the Pfizer Research Chair in Processes and Technologies for Analysis in Pharmaceutical Engineering at the University of Sherbrooke. Pfizer recently reaffirmed its commitment to the program.

2019 Engineering Institute of Canada Awards

A number of CAE Fellows were recently honoured by the Engineering Institute of Canada. Suzanne Lacasse won the Sir John Kennedy Medal for outstanding service to the profession and contributions to the science of engineering. The Julian C. Smith Medal for achievement in the development of Canada went to Professor Heather MacLean.  Professor Digvir Jayas was awarded the K.Y. Lo Medal for significant engineering contributions at the international level. Finally, EIC Fellowships were presented to Robert Andrews, John Chen, Andrew Jardine, Fakhreddine Karray, Jeffrey A. Packer and Laurence T. Yang.  Kudos to all!

2018 EY Canada National Entrepreneur of the Year

Kudos to Germain Lamonde, FCAE, Founder and Executive Chairman of EXFO, on being awarded 2018 EY Canada National Entrepreneur of the Year.

Dalhousie president to head Quantum Valley Ideas Lab in Waterloo

The president of Dalhousie University has announced he is  leaving the East Coast to lead a startup “ideas lab” in Waterloo.

Richard Florizone, FCAE, will be leading the new Quantum Valley Ideas Lab, a non-profit focused on quantum devices and their applications. It has major funding from the Ontario government and connections to the University of Waterloo.

Kudos to Pierre Lassonde, FACG, who has been named by Les Affaires as the most socially committed senior leader for his philanthropic efforts in fine arts and education.

New powder could reduce greenhouse gas emissions

An advanced carbon powder, being developed using a novel process in the lab of University of Waterloo Professor Zhongwei Chen, FCAE, could filter and remove carbon dioxide from emissions with almost twice the efficiency of conventional materials.
