CAE Fellow named to Future Skills Council

Judy Fairburn, FCAE, has been named to the new federal Future Skills Council.  According to Employment and Social Development Canada, “Future Skills is part of the Government’s plan to ensure that Canada’s skills development policies and programs are prepared to meet Canadians’ changing needs.”

2019 Distinguished Woman in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering

Molly Shoichet, FCAE, has been named a 2019 Distinguished Woman in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC). The recipients were announced February 11, to mark the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

Delinquent Accounts

 In an effort to encourage Fellows to pay their accounts on time, the Board has instructed that the names of Fellows who have not paid their accounts after three official notices are to be posted on the Fellows-only section of the website.  They may be seen here.

If you are one of the outstanding Fellows, please contact us immediately at 613-235-9056 to remit payment. If you believe you are on this list in error, or if there are extenuating circumstances, such as illness or financial hardship, that are preventing you from paying your fees, please contact cae-admin@cae-acg.ca.

Orders of Canada

We are proud to report that four Canadian Academy of Engineering Fellows have been named to the Order of Canada:

Dr. Yiyan Wu, C.M. FCAE, of CRC, “for his innovation as a leading authority and scientist in the field of digital television and multimedia communications research.”

Prof. Jamal Deen, C.M., FCAE, of McMaster University, “for his advancements in the fields of electrical engineering and applied physics, and for his leadership of multiple academic and professional institutions.”

Mr. Jim Estill , C.M., FCAE, of Danby Appliances,  “for his contributions to the Guelph and Waterloo technology communities and for his philanthropic efforts benefiting refugees.” and

Mr. Peter Irwin C.M., FCAE, “for his leadership in the Canadian wind engineering field, notably for his groundbreaking technique of wind sensor prediction.”

Gordon McRostie, FCAE, (b.1922-d.2018)

We are sorry to report the passing of Gordon McRostie, a valued Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering. What a life! Executive Director Kevin Goheen golfed with him late last year, and he was still demonstrating an outstanding short game. We pass our condolences on to his family and colleagues. Continuing Professional Development credits

Fellows are reminded that attendance at the CAE Annual Meeting or meetings of CAE Sections may qualify for Continuing Professional Development with your provincial regulator. Examples include:

  • The “Informal Activity” or “Presentations” components of APEGA;
  • The PEO PEAK continuing knowledge activity component (informal education or contributions to knowledge); or
  • The OIQ’s continuing education requirement.

Two Western professors inducted into the Canadian Academy of Engineering

Western University – 18 June 2018

On June 18, 2018, Electrical and Computer Engineering Professor Xianbin Wang and Mechanical and Materials Engineering Professor Jun Yang were among the 59 new Fellows inducted into the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE). The ceremony took place in Calgary, in conjunction with the Academy’s 2018 Annual General Meeting and Symposium.

University of British Columbia –  26 June 2018

Z Jane Wang, PEng, a professor in UBC’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Charles Haynes, PEng, a professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, have been named Fellows of the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE) for their “distinguished achievements and career-long service to the engineering profession.”

Engineers Canada Gold Medal Winner attributes workplace cooperation

University of Toronto Professor Levente Diosady, FCAE, is an engineer, researcher and educator. He developed the first Canadian food engineering program in an engineering faculty. He also developed widely used technologies for oilseed processing. His work on salt fortification enables the reduction of the incidence of iodine and iron deficiency disease affecting some 2 billion people in the developing world. For more information, click here.

Dan Meneley, FCAE (b. 1935 – d. 2018)

 We are sorry to report the passing of Dan Meneley, FCAE. Educated at the University of Saskatchewan and the University of London, his career in nuclear engineering led to senior positions at AECL and UOIT, as well as the International Nuclear Energy Academy. Most recently, Dan and the late Terry Rogers, FCAE, produced a discussion paper on behalf of the CAE on the state of nuclear energy in Canada for a CAETS meeting. Internet of Things and Blockchain Research Institute

York University Professor Dan Zhang, FCAE, and Western University Professor Wang Xian Bin, FCAE, a 5G communications research expert, are helping establish the the Canada-China IoT and Blockchain Research Institute (CCIOTCHAIN). For more information, click here.

Federal Expert Panel on Climate Change and Resilience

David Lapp, FCAE, contributed to this important Federal Expert Panel on Climate Change and Resilience. The report offers recommendations and indicators organized as follows:

Three engineering faculty members named CAE fellows

Three faculty members of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science have been appointed Fellows of the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE).

Faculty and alumni honoured by CAE

University of Waterloo – 25 June 2018

Waterloo Engineering professors and graduates were inducted into the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE) on June 18.

The new fellows include faculty members Fakhri Karray, electrical and computer engineering, Susan Tighe, civil and environmental engineering, John Yeow, systems design engineering, and adjunct professor Mary Wells, mechanical and mechatronics engineering.

Also inducted were Waterloo Engineering alumni Catherine Booth (BASc ‘ 88, SD, MASc  ’90, ManSci), Jim Estill (BASc ‘80, SD), Fraser Forbes (BASc ‘82, MASc ‘84 Chem),  Dianne Freeman (BASc, ’92, Civil), Josephine Hill (BASc ’91, MASc ’92, Chem) and David Ross (BASc ’91, Comp).

Carbon Pricing Alone Can’t Meet Canada’s GHG Emission Reduction Targets

The Conference Board of Canada – September 6, 2017

Carbon pricing will help Canada reduce emissions but the reductions will fall short of the government’s goal of a 30 per cent reduction from 2005 levels by 2030, according to a joint report by The Conference Board of Canada and The Canadian Academy of Engineering. Trillions of dollars in investment spending on clean energy infrastructure and significant changes to the way Canadians consume energy will be needed to achieve deep emission reductions.

Baining Guo Named Microsoft Distinguished Scientist

Baining Guo, FCAE, is a world-renowned researcher in computer graphics. He joined Microsoft Research Asia in its early days and has been a key leader of the lab’s multimedia efforts covering graphics, vision, and video technologies. His contributions in these areas have been instrumental in establishing MSRA as a world-class research lab. His team has made important contributions to Microsoft’s products and services, including Windows, Xbox, Azure, Bing, OneDrive, and Cognitive Services. He is a fellow of IEEE, ACM, and the Canadian Academy of Engineering. Baining got his PhD from Cornell and worked in academia as well as Silicon Valley (Intel Labs) before joining Microsoft in 1999.

Ecole Polytechnique Honours CAE Fellows at Spring Convocation

At its Spring engineering convocation. Ecole Polytechnique honoured a number of outstanding engineers, including CAE Fellows Clement Fortin and Ken Wu. Professor Wu was cited for his RF research work and Dr. Fortin for his development of aerospace university/industry linkages.

Professor Ke Wu, FCAE, of École Polytechnique won the IEEE’s 2014 Microwave Theory & Techniques Society Microwave Application Award. His co-winners were his colleagues Emeritus Professor Renato G. Bosisio and Dr. Ji Li.
